Charlie Sidney Hind
Peacefully on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, Charlie Hind, aged 101 years passed away at the Tabor Home in Morden, Mb.
Charlie was born on April 24, 1906 in Portsmouth, England. He was placed in an orphanage following his birth, never knowing who his parents were. He remained in the orphanage until 1924, when at the age of 17 he was selected to go to Canada to work. He made the long journey to Canada, spending one week on a boat and one week on a train as he traveled to the Hartney area of Manitoba. The journey was long and he spent many days without food or water. Once in Canada, the Salvation Army sent him to work on different farms in the area of Hartney. He eventually worked his way to the Carman and Sperling area where he continued working on different farms. He then moved to the Miami area where he took up residence with the McKerlie family spending the next 27 years of his life with them. In 1993 after recovering from a broken hip Charlie was again moved. His new home was in Morden where he resided with Mrs. Tina Hildebrand. Charlie remained with the Hildebrand family for 13 years and often stated he never had it as good as he did the last number of years. It wasn’t until 2006 when Charlie’s health determined that he could no longer live with Mrs. Hildebrand and the decision was made to move him to a care home. He spent some time at the Boundary Trails Health Centre waiting placement until there was room at the Tabor Home in Morden. Charlie was quite the character and made an impression on all who knew him. Everyone will miss his smile and sense of humor.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Morden Sommerfeld Mennonite Church, with Rev. John Friesen, Rev. John I. Peters, and Rev. Morris Vincent officiating. Interment followed at the Hillside Cemetery, Morden. Memorial donations may be made to the Tabor Home, 230 9th St. South, Morden, MB, R6M 1Y3. |
